The True Meaning of Valentine's Day

(How it should be celebrated)

February 14 each is observed worldwide as St. Valentine's Day. On this day people send greetings and gifts to a sweetheart, a friends or a loved one. Many people who do not know its origin spend it in one sexual sin or another.

THE ORIGIN OF ST. VALENTINE'S DAY

History has it that there was a priest called St. Valentine who lived in Rome around 250 A. D. Emperor Claudius who was the ruler wanted a big army and thought that men should volunteer to join. He discovered that many men did not want to leave their wives and fiancée and sign up to fight in the army. He was very angry and thought that if men were not married they would join his army. Hence he passed a law banning marriages.

St. Valentine thought this was ridiculous, so he continued to perform marriage ceremonies secretly, though he knew that he could die if caught. One day he was caught red-handed. Although the couple he was joining escapes, he was thrown in jail and sentenced to death. Many young people came to the prison to visit him. They threw flowers and notes up to his windows to let him know that they too believed in love and marriage and that they supported his ignoring the emperor degree.

One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard who was permitted to visit him in his cell. St. Valentine and this girl often sat and talked together for hours. On the day he was to dies he left her a note and signed it: “Love from your Valentine.” That was February 14, 269 A. D. and since then the day has been observed as St. Valentine’s Day.

THE MESSAGE

St. Valentine died for the family. He believed that men and women should get married and have children with whom they could express the pure family-love which God planted in man. He did not lay his life down for those committing sexual pervasion, so it will be wrong and ridiculous to commit fornication, adultery, homosexuality etc in his memory.

Therefore, on St. Valentine’ Day, do not engage in any immoral action rather take action of love to appreciate GOD for loving you by doing the following:

  • · forgiving someone.
  • · renewing your marital vows with your spouse (if you are married).
  • · visiting and giving gift to the sick, the elderly, the widows, the orphans and the poor.
  • · spending time with and giving gift to members of your family.
  • · telling people about the love of God in Jesus Christ.

There is another love note written to the whole world in the Bible in John 3:16.

This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. (THE MESSAGE)

Clay in the Hand of the Potter

Jeremiah18: 1-6, Isaiah 64:8, Romans 9:21

INTRODUCTION:

God is the potter we are clay in His hands. He created us (i.e man) for a purpose as we can see in Genesis 1:26, a verse considered as God’s vision statement for creating man. The clay is used by the potter to form whatever vessel he desires. He determines what share the vessel take. The clay asks no question, because the master potter knows what to do with it. It is moulded to fit the potter’s desire it is first resources then a vessel. This is made possible by its compositions: i.e. Flexibility, Smoothness, Stickiness, Retainability and Softness.

Life is not Always Fair but God is Always Faithful

Job 1:1-22

Introduction

It is a thing of joy to believe in a God that is consistent, faithful and loving. He is the God that is faithful in keeping all His words and promises. It is a thing of joy to believe in the Lord that is dependable, unchanging and gracious.

We have, by His grace, the year 2011 commenced, and the first month of the year has come and gone. Many of us have gone through various types of experiences, some good, and some bad in 2010, but the fact remains that we are still alive and very hopeful for a better 2011. As the saying goes, “When there is life, there is hope”. May this coming year be full of more grace for us, leading to fulfillment, self-sufficiency and abundance, Amen. Life, this year, might have treated you unfairly but I want to assure you that God is always faithful.

Your Space

“See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him. If you listen carefully to what he says and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you. My angel will go ahead of you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and Jebusites and I will wipe them out.” Exodus 23:20-23.

Introduction

When the Lord God of Israel was about to fulfil His promise to the children of Israel, He decided to take them to the land of Canaan to occupy “a land flowing with milk and honey.” According to our text, it was the intention of God to drive away the occupants of the land and make room for His beloved people Israel. As a member of the ‘New Israel in Christ’, God has a specific place for you in life to occupy. May you have the wisdom to follow the angel that the Lord will send ahead of you to get you to your promised land. Amen.
